UK providers Vodafone and O2 roll out their first 4G data service since EE in October 2012

You see it on television adverts, you see it in magazines and papers, and now you will be seeing it from potentially your own provider. 4G. But what is 4G and what is the big deal about being able to use it?

Aug. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- You see it on television adverts, you see it in magazines and papers, and now you will be seeing it from potentially your own provider. 4G. But what is 4G and what is the big deal about being able to use it?

4G is the latest technology used to connect to the internet without the need of a Wi-fi connection. It is roughly 6 times faster than standard 3G on most handsets and by 2017 Ofcom is looking for 98% of the United Kingdom to be using 4G. “It’s great! I hate trying to go online on my mobile when I am in a rush, but with 4G it will be pretty much the same speed as broadband which will make life so much easier!” says Scott Pattrick, Managing Director, Navarre Clientelle. The roll out of 4G by Vodafone and O2 will initially be limited to certain areas and locations, Vodafone will be limited to certain parts of London and O2 will stretch to London, Leeds and Bradford. “Bradford isn’t too far from here at our Manchester branch, so it won’t be long before we can get our hands on it too.” Says Scott Pattrick, managing Director, Navarre Clientelle.

As exciting as the roll out is, it has been stated that networks are ‘soft-pedalling’ 4G and that other nations are way ahead of us in terms of getting  the latest technology out there. Places such as Japan, the US, and Australia are already way ahead in the fourth-generation release. Reports have shown that smartphone users in the United Kingdom have not been as excited by the release of 4G as expected with nearly 25% of users not seeing the huge benefits of faster networks, especially for the costs expected to go along with it. “Pretty much everyone uses smartphones these days, and definitely mobiles, they are used for emails, social media, work uses and even to watch movies and download games, we are in a generation where mobiles and smartphones can be used for pretty much everything – and they are – so why not pay a little extra to speed it all up?” says Scott Pattrick, Managing Director, Navarre Clientelle. The remaining major network Three, will be providing 4G in London, Birmingham and Manchester in December, and so by 2014 all major networks will provide 4G services, however 3 have set to provide 4G to existing customers without any extra costs.

Either way, it looks as though the United Kingdom will be bombarded with 4G by the end of 2013, some networks providing it for free, some at a cost as part of a premium package. Whatever network you’re with, will you be a part of the 4G epidemic set to come?
