Silver Doesn’t Mean Second Best

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Aug. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- The Olympics may teach us many important values, but one thing they have accidentally taught us is that silver is a second place metal, the miss congeniality to the first place gold. This distinction dates back some one hundred and twenty years when they held the first modern Olympics and were trying to decide what three precious metals they were going to use to denote first, second and third place. The three most precious metals at the time, in terms of how much they cost, were gold, silver and bronze and so the decision was made. Ever since then, silver has been fighting to get out of the shadow of gold.

It is true from a strictly economic standpoint silver is less expensive than gold. It is equally true that if they were to start the Olympics today and choose the three most precious of metals to make the medals out of, silver wouldn’t make the cut. In a bit of irony, gold probably would make it either. There have been many discoveries made between then and now that have yielded metals that are rare and therefore more valuable, shutting them both off of the platform. One final note about all of the medal/metal brou-ha-ha is that the awards they give out only have a small percentage of the supposed metal that it is and is instead a collection of alloys.

None of this speaks to the truth about silver and why it should always be considered when shopping for fine jewelry. You are not buying jewelry as an investment, like you would a commodity or a stock. You are buying something that speaks to you. You want something that you are going to love to wear. That is why when you go to VanScoy Diamonds, don’t think just because it costs more it is the best one for you.
