By: Mayerson Marketing & Public Relations Last year, more than 2,500 people attended the Club’s event, which engages the community, local businesses and service agencies as they host booths and provide resources for youth and their families. “Day for Kids” encourages positive interaction with kids and their families through fun, play, mentoring and enrichment activities. The free event boasts a family-fun atmosphere, with games, prizes, face painting, jolly jumpers, a rock wall, lazertag, a petting zoo, Gamez on Wheelz and pony rides, along with great food and more. There will be live stage entertainment, including the Voices of Hope Choir and a reptile show put on by the Reptile Family, Kealoha and Company will perform a Polynesian Floor Show and BGCOP’s own Soul Steppers will perform. There will also be information booths where families can get information about services provided within the community and BGCOP will be providing free new memberships. “Children thrive when they have a caring adult in their lives. This event brings awareness to that and gets families to spend fun time together,” said Tim Blaylock, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. “By setting aside a Saturday, we hope to encourage adults and youth to spend more time together and build a connection that will last a lifetime.” The Boys & Girls Clubs of America created the annual event in 2005 to strengthen relationships between positive adults and kids by educating them on the importance of spending meaningful time together. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme exists to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. With three full-service clubs, 13 school program sites and one housing site, the organization is one of the largest of its kind in California, serving more than 9,000 members annually. The group is also the first Boys & Girls Club of its kind to open a site inside a Juvenile Justice Center in the state of California. Program areas offered to youth include character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, technology and sports, fitness and recreation.
