ACTE announce tiny Java™ programmable Wireless Module from Gemalto

ACTE, the U.K’s Wireless M2M and telemetry electronic component specialist have announced the release of Gemalto’s Cinterion BGS5, wireless M2M module with advanced processing power.

BASINGSTOKE, U.K. - Aug. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Based on Gemalto’s latest LGA platform offering a common footprint compatibility between other 2G and 3G Gemalto wireless engines, Cinterion BGS5 measures just 18.8 x 27.6 x 2.7mm. The combination of the embedded Java™ open platform with 2MB RAM and 4MB flash file with quad band GSM and class 12 GPRS capability make the Cinterion BGS5 one of the most versatile, stand alone wireless M2M modules on the market.

The application processor ensures BGS5 is the perfect fit for asset tracking, remote management of devices or aftermarket telematics. In these applications, the module is programmed to collect specific data, process it via its embedded intelligence and send the results at a scheduled time independent of a host microcontroller. Device makers can program and add applets to fit their requirements or use existing JSR’s which are available publicly. As the Java™ platform is open, code can be easily ported to other Java™ devices without requiring additional modifications.

The unique BGS5 footprint, in an LGA package offers a seamless migration with 5 other 2G to 3G modules within the family via a single design footprint. These include the world’s smallest HSPA wireless modules ensuring a future proof design and longevity of M2M applications can be realised.

Full control is via AT commands, which includes TCP/IP stack access, whilst other secure connections for client IP services are supported, as are internet services such as TCP/UDP server/client, DNS, Ping, FTP client and HTTP client.

Operating on a voltage range of 3.3 – 4.5V, BGS5 is optimised for low power consumption, which includes just 1.35A peak power in 900MHz 2G mode and numerous low power modes which enable typically 25% less power than competitive devices. Being a true industrial product, BGS5 allows full functioning operation at -40 to 85˚C. As with all Cinterion® wireless M2M modules from Gemalto, BGS5 complies with all regulatory requirements for cellular engines including R&TTE, GCF, CE, FCC, PTCRB, IC and UL approved.

David Taylor, PR Manager of ACTE comments “ BGS5 provides a low cost yet intelligent GSM/GPRS module for System Integrators requiring a future proof cellular solution in their products. These are among the smallest, lowest powered M2M modules available and with a heritage of producing cellular engines since the mid 90’s, the Gemalto experience and know how gone into these devices ensures designers can be assured of a fantastic reputation for reliability and performance once operational in the field.”

Gemalto M2M is the worldwide leading supplier of cellular machine to machine (M2M) communication modules and combines unparalleled M2M engineering expertise and localised worldwide customer support with a strong portfolio of high quality GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPA+ and LTE products.
