Inverted gardening has gained significant popularity in the last decade. By maximizing gardening space, as well as eliminating many chores inherent to traditional gardening, such as weeding, staking, and pest control...it allows for, or enhances gardens in urban areas, apartments/condos, or any space where a garden's potential is not fully realized. Among the products currently marketed for the inverted growing of plants, none allow the consumer to utilize the container of their choice or to invert a fully grown upright plant with ease. The Phlip Plant Inverter solves these problems.
The Phlip was conceived while Corey, the inventor, was staring at his overcrowded tomato garden. Thinning the plants out was a necessary task, but what to do with them once they had been dug up was the problem. Digging up more grass to make the garden larger was not an option, so each tomato plant would have to go into a container. After having transplanted the tomato plants into containers, they had to go somewhere. Hanging them up over the existing garden or over the lawn next to the garden was the best option not only for practical reasons, but for aesthetics as well.
"I did some Internet research about DIY upside down planters since current upside down planters on the market were not viable for what I wanted to do. I was less than impressed with what I found. I saw images of 5 gallon buckets and milk jugs dangling from string with plants sticking out of them. None of them afforded me the ability to transplant these fully grown plants into them or use the containers I had chosen for my plants, and they simply looked like suspended household garbage", Corey said.
From the moment the Phlip was conceived to the moment a working prototype was constructed, only about two hours had gone by. "Over the following weeks, I tweaked the design along the way until I was satisfied with it's strength and appearance...made about a dozen Phlips, then put them to work," says Corey, "and they have performed beyond my expectations. They have stood up to all the wind and rain and they have no problem holding up to 50lbs."
