LOS ANGELES, August 13, 2013—The Big Draw LA, a month-long audience participatory drawing initiative that spans the region and the globe, returns to Los Angeles for the fourth year this October 2013. The Big Draw LA creates opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to discover that drawing can enhance how they see, think, and invent. A worldwide celebration founded in the United Kingdom in 2000 and joined by 22 countries internationally, it is presented in Los Angeles by Ryman Arts, an arts education organization that fosters the education of gifted young artists in Southern California. Recently awarded a two-year grant from the James Irvine Foundation, Ryman Arts plans on expanding The Big Draw LA to encourage an even wider audience to create and share their drawings, and engage the general public in art making across Southern California.

“Drawing is a universal language that connects people of all ages and walks of life,” says Diane Brigham, Executive Director of Ryman Arts. “The benefits of drawing—for children and adults alike—extend far beyond providing a creative outlet. Participation in the arts also enhances imagination, problem-solving abilities and even tolerance. What’s more, The Big Draw LA helps to unite Southern Californians in the joy and satisfaction of creative expression.”

In 2011 and 2012, over 15,000 people came out to draw at 90+ events throughout the region, including those presented by the Huntington Library in Pasadena, Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Long Beach Marathon, the Skirball Cultural Center, J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Villa, the North East Los Angeles Art Walk, Downtown Los Angeles and Museum Row along Wilshire Blvd.

Community Groups Invited to Participate

Now is the time for local organizations—clubs, schools, community centers, museums, and neighborhoods to plan and register their public drawing event for October. Organizations already planning a 2013 Big Draw LA event include the Skirball Cultural Center, E.V.E. Studio and San Gabriel Valley Pride in addition to Ryman Arts. The Big Draw LA is committed to promoting inclusiveness and offering a diversity of drawing experiences across Southern California at both traditional and non-traditional venues. Following The Big Draw LA, presenting organizations may apply for one of several special awards that honor outstanding Big Draw LA activities. More information for groups considering doing a participatory drawing event and resources to assist with planning is available at www.thebigdrawla.org.

Make Your Mark in the Park on October 13
The Ryman Arts' Big Draw LA flagship event, "Make Your Mark in the Park," takes place at noon on Sunday, October 13 at Los Angeles’ Grand Park. A fun-filled, creative afternoon, will celebrate the act of drawing by welcoming thousands of Angelenos to draw together. With both public performances and many participatory drawing activities, Grand Park will be transformed into a giant experimental drawing studio.  Ryman Arts students will help lead the drawing efforts, engaging the public to join in for this enormous collaborative art project. These drawing projects will be photographed and ultimately showcased online at www.thebigdrawla.org. Last year’s event was attended by over 3,400.
