The History of Jack O Lantern

As the old story goes, Jack was Irish and grew up long ago in a simple village where he developed a reputation for laziness as well as being clever. More times than not, it is believed, he used his intelligence to wiggle out of any work that was expected of him, and preferred to simply lie under a solitary oak endlessly daydreaming. For spending money he often used at the local pub, he would look for some 'easy shillings' from gambling, which was a pastime in which he excelled. And, during his entire life, never made a single friend, he never made a single enemy, and, equally important, never performed a selfless act for anyone.

It is reported that one Halloween, it became time for him to die. But, when the devil arrived to take his soul, Jack was, as he often did, lazily drinking at the pub, and asked the devil if he could finish his ale. Since the devil agreed and cooperated so easily, and Jack quickly thought to himself, 'If the devil really have such power, he could transform himself into a shilling.'

At that simply request, the devil snorted that that was merely child’s play, but wanting to get on with the business, he instantly changed himself into a shilling. At that, Jack immediately grabbed the coin and held it tightly in his hand, which just happened to bore a cross-shaped scar. And, the power of the cross was enough to keep the devil imprisoned there, since everyone knows the devil is powerless when faced with the cross. Jack continued holding devil in this position until he granted him one more year of life. Jack, thinking that would be plenty of time to repent, left the devil at the pub and went on his merry way.

Jack enjoyed the next 12 months until the next Halloween rolled around, but he never got around to repenting his sins. When the devil appeared to claim his soul, Jack began to bargain again, but this time challenging him to a roll of the dice. This was a game that Jack excelled at and an offer Satan simply couldn't resist. The devil threw two ones, which is called snake eyes and was about to take control of Jack's soul when Jack used a pair of dice he had whittled himself. As Jack threw his dice, they landed as two threes, forming the T-shape of a cross, so once again the devil was powerless. Jack had successfully bargained for more time to repent.

As the second year rolled on, he kept thinking he’d get around to repenting later, even if it was at the last possible minute. But, the agreed upon day arrived and death took him by surprise. Jack was surprised that the devil hadn’t showed up, but Jack quickly found out why. Before Jack knew it he was standing in front of the pearly gates, but St. Peter shook his head sadly and said he could not admit him, because during his entire life Jack had never performed a single act of selflessness. So, Jack presented himself before the gates of hell, but the devil was still seething and refused to have anything to do with him.

Jack was at a loss for what to do or where to go now, and proclaimed, 'Where can I go?' and 'How can I see in the darkness?'. It is thought that the devil then tossed a burning coal into a hollow pumpkin and told Jack to wander forever, using only the pumpkin to light his path. So, from that faithful day onward, this has been called 'Jack o’ the Lantern.' And, sometimes, Jack appears on Halloween as the Jack O Lantern.
