MARIETTA, Ga. - Aug. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Prescription painkiller overdoses are part of a growing epidemic, especially among women. Between the years 1999-2010 nearly 48,000 women died of prescription painkiller overdoses. It is a problem that is highly over looked in the United States. With over 6,000 deaths for women in 2010, it is definitely something that people should be more aware of. Deaths for men are almost half those for women.

Heath care providers need to be aware that women are at a higher risk. They also need to screen and monitor for substance abuse and mental health problems. There are different monitoring programs to help identify the patients who may be taking prescription pain killers improperly.

The government has now started to do research on trends to help understand the epidemic that has taken place. They are working to inform health care providers on the information that they find and are developing programs and policies that help make sure that patients are safe and prevent overdoses.

If you are taking or have taken prescription pain killers, always practice safe habits. Use the drugs only as directed. Dispose of painkillers properly when you are finished, even if there are still some pills left. Do not every share or sell prescription drugs. To get help with substance abuse you can call (1-800-622-HELP) or call (1-800-222-1222) for Poison Help.

Prescription painkillers can be a great aid to those who have significant pain, but people must be aware of the danger or addictions involved.
