A few short weeks ago, Boston-based startup, Ivory Standard, a universal online job board, has been launched. It aims at simplifying the search for employment by combining the best features of the most popular platforms and adding a host of new ones. Jobseekers can browse the job listings for free, with or without registration. Likewise, they can sign up for the JobTicker service, available for a small monthly fee, to by notified by SMS any time an opening matching their criteria is posted.
Employers and recruiters can advertise their vacancies for a fraction of competitors' prices. They can avail themselves of an intricate tagging system to specify common criteria, like whether a job is part- or full-time. Those who post regularly can register for membership to enjoy special privileges like posting multiple jobs with the click of a Send button or embedding a customized job listing widget onto one of their company page.
“I really could have done with Ivory Standard when I graduated from college,” says the company's founder and CEO. “I was out in the real world, desperate for a job, and cursed with a sluggish economy. Like many of my peers, I turned to Craigslist and got myself a good number of interviews. However, there was clearly room for improvement. With the former being divided into coarse geographic regions, it was not always easy to gauge proximity. And much as I wanted to respond to the ads as soon as they got posted, it was easier said than done because I couldn't be near my computer 24/7. How could that be possible with me being on the move, attending job fairs and browsing for Help Wanted signs? Browsing the web with my flip phone would not come cheap, so text alerts would really be a godsend.... Thus the JobTicker idea was born. It would still be another few years before I would build the Ivory Standard platform, but my first job search made me feel very strongly about the need for an easy to use, universal job board. The company's name comes from ivory being a popular color of resume paper and the need for a simple industrial standard....”
Ivory Standard currently boasts 101 job categories and is available in six countries—the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines. The executive team anticipates expanding even further, eventually achieve worldwide coverage, and adding more categories in the near future. Longer-term plans include features like smartphone apps, virtual Help Wanted signs, an in-house resume service, and Ivory Seals—special badges to mark the ads posted by trusted employers.
To welcome new clients, the startup is running a trailblazer sale with deep discounts on membership fees. Employers can create a VIP account (with unlimited posting privileges) for less than what other boards charge for an individual ad. In addition, Ivory Standard is giving away t-shirts to the first 100 jobseekers who open a free account.
