SCLC Celebrates March On Washington 50th Anniversary With “MLK: A Tribute In Song”

LOS ANGELES - Aug. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES – On Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 3:30 pm at New Hope Baptist Church, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California (SCLC), in association with the Los Angeles NAACP, celebrates the March on Washington’s 50th Anniversary and honors SCLC founder, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a free concert, MLK: A Tribute in Song featuring acclaimed vocalist and USC Thornton School of Music alumna, Lura Daniels-Ball.   

Open to the public, MLK: A Tribute in Song illustrates Dr. King’s key milestones through songs of various genres with a multimedia presentation.  In addition, Daniels-Ball-- accompanied by Danny Burgin, Minister of Music for New Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church – also pay a special homage to Mrs. Coretta Scott King, a trained singer.

MLK: A Tribute in Song is part of a seven day collective recognition of the March’s 50th Anniversary by SCLC with the Los Angeles NAACP, the Urban League of LA, The Black Community, Clergy & Labor Alliance (BCCLA), LA County Federation of Labor, New Frontier Democratic Club and other community, faith-based & labor organizations.  Also, affiliated with the event is renowned community-based technology non-profit, Foundation for Successful Solutions, Park Windsor Baptist Church and Faith in Christ Ministries.  SCLC President/CEO, Pastor William D. Smart, Jr. of Westchester’s Christ Liberation Ministrynotes, “As one of the only SCLC chapters west of the Rockies, we knew we had to commemorate the March on Washington’s 50 year anniversary, while developing an agenda for the next 50 years.  We encourage everyone to come for inspiration through song to empower you for community service from the powerful voice of Lura Daniels-Ball, and the powerful legacy of Dr. King.  We alsothank Pastor Hooks and New Hope for hosting this great event.”  MLK: A Tribute in Song is also the kick-off event leading up to the SCLC’s annual King Dinner being held in January 2014.

Originally directed by award-winning and legendary filmmaker, Charles Burnett, MLK: A Tribute in Song is written by writer-producer, J.M. Morris -- a former King Center National Scholar and intern for Mrs. King.  Morris is producing the event along with John E. Sampson III, who also continues the directing template created by Burnett.  Co-producing is Val Peacock, and the Associate Producer is Lena Cole-Dennis.

MLK:  A Tribute in Song is being held in the 107 year old, historic New Hope Baptist Church at5200 S.
