James Ratliff introduced Choate into his stable of artists in 2008. Patricia Ratliff states: “Choate is recognized by her signature palette of brilliant acrylics which she mixes and paints into literal ribbons of color to create canvases which range from quite small to very large. These colorful paintings appeal to the sensibilities of people from all over the United States and abroad, providing special pleasure to those lucky enough to own them.” The artist reflects, “When I started painting in acrylics a few years ago, I discovered my love of line and liking it.” Ratliff comments: “Judy has developed a special talent of weaving line with color into her spectacular landscapes.” A move from Nevada to Sedona opened up communications, dialogue and actual class work with the companionship of interested artist, neighbor and gallery owner, Patricia Ratliff. The networking then drew the attention of Pat’s husband, Jim Ratliff (the other side of James Ratliff Gallery ownership). Jim Ratliff’s seasoned experience in recognizing and promoting promising artists prompted him to suggest that Judy move beyond watercolor to oil/acrylics and larger canvasses. Voila! Choate listened and this work was enhanced by the artist’s personal need to devote herself to closing her deceased artist/aunt’ With her husband, Charlie, Judy now resides in Tucson finding incomparable Tucson Mountain vistas, on view from her studio, full of luminosity. Choate does consult her sketchbook for ideas; she does not photographically document in paint literal “scenes”. Currently, Choate is concentrating on her use of perspective and incorporating that with elements of design. This artist loves her chosen life, a life she did not expect. Entirely self taught and guided by Jim and Pat Ratliff, Judy Choate states, “I’m finding my way.” She estimates her greatest lesson is she’s “learned not to be locked in” as she observes her canvas “taking on its own form”. “I just try to go with what I see evolving on the canvas and explore the new possibilities," Choate is the most recent star championed by the fifty-year track record of James Ratliff Gallery in the cultivation, exhibition and representation of contemporary art and artists.
