By: Motor Werks of Barrington The new transmission was first introduced in Europe in the Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTEC®. It’s just a glimpse of what’s to come, too — the automaker said that the transmission is suitable for both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, in addition to hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It was also said that the new nine-speed transmission would be used in most models in the coming years. In Europe, the E350 BlueTEC® equipped with the nine-speed automatic transmission is selling for the U.S. equivalent of $72,269. U.S. drivers will get their first chance to try a vehicle equipped with the new nine-speed transmission next fall, when the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class will launch. It’s expected that, initially, the new transmission will be available in at least one CLS-Class model, before slowly being introduced to the rest of the lineup. While no estimates were given by Mercedes-Benz, it’s expected that the new transmission will offer improved fuel economy.
