FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Aug. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- The construction management team of Moss-Miller LLC has won prestigious national recognition for the design-build of a major new research building at Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

The NSU Ocean Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystem Science (CoE CRES) (http://www.nova.edu/ocean/excellence) won the National Design-Build Award from the Design-Build Institute of America in the category of Industrial/Process/Research Facilities.

“This project required tremendous innovation and creativity and we are honored to get national recognition,” said Moss & Associates (http://www.mosscm.com) construction management Senior Vice President Brett Atkinson, who has overseen construction on this project and others during NSU’s multi-year expansion. “By handling a project from beginning to end, we were able to offer NSU a more integrated process. At the end of the day, this is world-class and will solidify the university’s leadership role in global oceanographic research.”

Last year, the center won overall in the education category of the Florida Design-Build Awards presented by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) (http://www.dbia.org) Florida Region.

The national DBIA will present the award Nov. 5 in Las Vegas as part of the Design-Build Conference and Expo.

The CoE CRES, located at the university’s Oceanographic Center in Hollywood, Fla., is the only research facility in the United States dedicated to coral reef ecosystem research. Funded in part by a $15 million stimulus grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the facility encompasses all disciplines required for integrated coral reef studies. The center’s 87,000-square-foot, 5-story building accommodates these disciplines, which include plant and animal studies, hydrodynamics, genomics, geospatial analysis and mapping, and biodiversity.  The facility was built to meet LEED Silver Certification or higher.

Design-build is a method in which one entity (a design-builder) forges a single contract with the owner to provide both the architectural/engineering design services and the construction services. The Design-Build Institute of America is dedicated to leading the expansion of the single source delivery method across all industries and markets. The CoA CRES is a design-build project with Moss-Miller, Cannon Design and ACAI architects.
