Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity Honorary Member, Bayard Rustin, Awarded Presidential Medal Of Freedom

 
HOUSTON - Aug. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Houston, TX – Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity Inc., the first national fraternity established for gay men of color is proud to celebrate the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Bayard Rustin. Rustin, the organizer of the March on Washington during the Civil Rights Movement, is an honorary member of Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity Inc. For his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his championing of equal rights for all, Bayard Rustin is being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President of the United States Barack Obama. The award will be handed out later this year.

The awarding of the Medal of Freedom to Bayard Rustin magnifies and illuminates the contributions of this LGBT icon that fought for the good of both the African American community and the LGBT community. “Too often we allow our iconic LGBT brothers and sisters to be dismissed. I applaud President Obama for his dedication to ensuring that all Americans are created equally and that the face of our nation begins to reflect that of those that built it over the course of the past 200 years,” stated National President, Kendrick T. Clack.

 

In honor of Bayard Rustin, Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity Inc. awards the Bayard Rustin Scholarship to support the educational advancement of gay men of color. Throughout the nation, chapters will be hosting commemorative celebrations in honor of their honorary brother.  

Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Incorporated (DPhiU) is a national service organization that was founded on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL in 1985. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established for gay men of color. It is comprised of members in city chapters in five regions across the United States. Its membership includes gay men who exemplify its motto of “Service to our Kind,” through academic excellence, certified leadership skills, and who are consistently involved in creating change in the global community through the programs of service embodied in the fraternity’s national program goals. Through its core mission, Delta Phi Upsilon has dedicated itself to improving the quality of life for its members and those it serves. The organization is led by its 6th National President Kendrick T. Clack of Houston, TX, whose administration's programmatic theme is “The H.E.A.R.T. of Delta Phi Upsilon.”
