WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - Aug. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness for people over the age of 50, and the most common cause of blindness in the western world. More than 1.75 million people in the United States currently have some form of AMD, and that number is expected to grow to over 3 million people by 2020. AMD, along with other eye diseases, can be  detected through early screening. In some cases, the earlier the diagnosis, the more likely an eye care provider can improve the outcome for the patient.

The goal of Eye Screen is to test your central vision on a regular basis. To do this, the app uses two eye screening tests: the Mini Snellen and the Amsler Grid. The Mini Snellen tests central vision, or the bull’s eye portion of eyesight (when thinking of a ringed target). The Amsler Grid  Is designed to test for a wider visual field. In addition to AMD, these screening tests also warn of other potential eye problems or diseases that may be subtle, painless and difficult to detect. These problems include cataracts, vitreous hemorrhage (new floaters), diabetic retinopathy and various forms of glaucoma. Individuals with high blood pressure are at increased risk for eye disease.

Eye Screen is available now at the iTunes store. Priced at just $.99, the app is  suggested for anyone (especially persons over the age of 50) who want to take a more pro-active role in their personal eye care. By setting an internal alarm in the app, users receive a reminder to take the exam periodically. While no application can take the place of a doctor’s visit, this app offers you a helpful tool to  monitor your eye health  on a regular basis.

Other Eye Screen Features include:

• Personal profile page to enter glasses or contacts prescription and eye doctor contact information.

•  Reminder alarm to use the Eye Screen app on a personally selected interval.

• Links to eye health organizations and websites to learn more about various eye conditions and diseases

•  A Yelp mapping tool to help you  to find an eye care professional near you.

Eye Screen is now available at the iTunes Store.
