Vintage Postcards Depict the History of Salinas

Local authors team up to pen new book using extraordinary, vintage images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Aug. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Postcard History Series is Salinas from local authors the Monterey County Historical Society, Gary S. Breschini, Mona Gudgel and Trudy Haversat. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and postcards showcasing Salina’s past.

Salinas is named for the broad saltwater slough that once seeped in from Monterey Bay, saturating the plain between the Sierra de Salinas and the Gavilan Mountains. Originally used for cattle, a town developed from a stage stop after the Gold Rush. The land was then drained and used for grains, potatoes, sugar beets and other crops. After World War I, irrigation permitted the growing of lettuce, broccoli, and other row crops. Salinas became known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” and one of the wealthiest cities in the United States.

Salinas illustrates the rich history of the area by showcasing vintage postcards which display the scenes from years gone by.  By allowing readers to glimpse the history of yesterday they can learn more about Salinas’s modern identity.

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
