The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project and the International Surf Lifesaving Association Join Forces

Volunteer lifeguards from the International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA) and Lifeguards Without Borders (LWB) are teaming up with the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP) to offer a Certification Course as an initiative to reduce drowning.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Aug. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Founded in 2008, ISLA’s mission is to prevent drowning worldwide by building a culture of water safety. Comprised entirely of volunteers; the organization provides training, medical supplies, disaster relief, and emergency personnel to communities in need around the world.

The GLSRP and ISLA will offer the ISLA Great Lakes Open Water/Surf Lifeguard Certification Course. The course will be held at Camp Geneva in Holland, MI, on October 4, 5, and 6th. The course will be 30 intensive hours of training that includes lectures and examinations in the classrooms, demanding physical activities and hands-on practical training. The course is open to anyone over the age of 16 who is CPR/First aid certified and is able to swim 600 yards continuously.  Passing course participants will receive a Basic Open Water ISLA certificate. The ISLA Great Lakes Open Water/Surf Lifeguard Certification Course is designed to educate and train participants on how to save lives.

“With over three hundred drownings in the last three years, the Great Lakes area is the hot zone for drownings in the U.S. Countless rescues are performed nearly every day by courageous surfers and we want to make sure that they have the training not to become victims themselves,”  said ISLA President, Henry Reyes. “By offering this course, we can give the participants a foundation of lifesaving skills from which they can build upon. Through this training we hope develop trained professionals and to reduce the drowning rates for the Great Lakes.”
