Don't let Georgia Women get a Mean and Cruel DEAL

ATLANTA - Aug. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- On August 8, 2013, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) used his executive powers to bar state employee health insurance plans from offering abortion coverage.  In the 2013 session, the state House was unable to advance a Senate-approved (http://go.nationalpartnership.org/site/News2?news_iv_ctrl=-1&abbr=daily2_&page=NewsArticle&id=38744) bill (HB 246 (http://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-US/Display/20132014/HB/246) http://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-US/Display/20132014/HB/246) on the issue before the end of the legislative session. So, the Gov. is using his executive powers to deny women healthcare.

Georgia's State Health Benefit Plan covers about 650,000 retirees, current workers and dependents. In 2011, 366 beneficiaries sought abortions, compared with 545 in 2009. The plan paid $213,000 for abortion care in 2011, down from $343,000 in 2009. The average wage of Georgia employees is $20,000/yr.

Under this Deal, a woman covered under Georgia State Health Benefits will be unable to get insurance payments for procedures relating to the termination of pregnancies, unless her life is in danger.  As every miscarriage is a termination of pregnancy, could the New Deal could result in women who have miscarriages being unable to afford medical treatment until her life is in danger from not being treated?
