By: MEOW It’s all part of the kickoff for the MEOW Con international conference for women in music, held at the Austin Renaissance Hotel October 24-26. Suzi, who lives in England, will receive the coveted Woman of Valor Award for her nearly 50 years as a role model and inspiration for women in rock. Former Go-Go’s bassist Kathy Valentine of the Bluebonnets will present the award. Kathy, a budding guitarist, was 14 years old and visiting family in England when she saw Suzi perform “Can the Can”on the UK television program, “Top of the Pops.” “I’d never seen a gal be a rock star” before, she recalls. “It changed everything!” Suzi will perform five songs – including “Can the Can” – accompanied by local musicians Rick Carney on guitar, George Mack on keyboards and Paul Soliz on drums as well as a horn section provided by Anthropos Arts and directed by Dylan Jones. Another WOV highlight: Long time Austin Chronicle writer and local icon Margaret Moser will be honored with a lifetime achievement award for excellence in journalism and her work to elevate the status of women in music. Tickets for the Woman of Valor Banquet are $125 and include a three-course dinner. For more information visit www.meowcon.com. End
