Local Author and Grassroots Committee Team Up in Effort to Save Mount Manresa

Book Signing and Panel Discussion to Support Community’s Petition to Give Mount Manresa Landmark Status

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Aug. 8, 2013 - PRLog -- The Committee to Save Mount Manresa along with local author Thomas W. Matteo is hosting a book signing and panel discussion in order to raise awareness about the importance of Mount Manresa to the community of Staten Island.

With a history dating back to the early 1900s, the Mount Manresa Jesuit Retreat House has been a local landmark on Staten Island for 100 years.  Founded by Rev. Terence Shealy during the lay retreat movement, Mount Manresa was a relaxing and spiritual retreat for thousands across the country for many years.

Recently, Mount Manresa has been sold by the Jesuits to builder, the Savo Brothers. The Committee to Save Mount Manresa believes that this 15+ acre property is worthy of environmental and landmark protection. They believe that the space should be turned into a much needed park for public use.

Local author and historian Thomas W. Matteo has compiled over 200 vintage photographs to create his book Images of America: Mount Manresa.  He will be discussing and signing copies of his book in order to raise awareness and support fundraising efforts.
