Raleigh’s Honorable Residents Celebrated in New Book

Local authors team up to share the stories of the legendary locals using vintage images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Aug. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Legendary Locals series is Legendary Locals of Raleigh from local authors Stormi Souter and Elizabeth Weichel. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of the places and peoples that make Raleigh legendary.

Legendary Locals of Raleigh seeks to capture the essence of the city by highlighting many of the individuals who have contributed to its development.

The book highlights people like the first resident, Joel Lane, who sold North Carolina the land to establish Raleigh in 1792; James H. Young, a courageous African American politician during Reconstruction; “Scottie” Stephenson, a broadcasting legend and matriarch of Capitol Broadcasting Company; John Chavis, a free black reverend and prominent schoolteacher of Raleigh’s black and white students in the early 1800s; Katharine Stinson, the Federal Aviation Administration’s first female employee, whose career choice was inspired by a conversation with Amelia Earhart at Raleigh Municipal Airport; and Ella Baker, a local Shaw University graduate, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. confidant, and founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, an influential civil rights organization.

Legendary Locals of Raleigh is only an overview of the many who have shaped Raleigh while calling it home.

Highlights of Legendary Locals of Raleigh include:
•   Highlights Raleigh’s Modernist movement through the NC State School of Design and architects and artists such as Kamphoefner, Nowicki, Matsumoto, Small, Bell and Deitrick.
•   Showcases war heroes to Nobel Peace Prize winners, politicians to protesters, entrepreneurs to outlaws, this book showcases the wide range of personalities who have contributed—and who still contribute—to the city Raleigh is today.
•   Includes images of some of Raleigh’s “firsts,” including its first inhabitants and explorers, its first map, its first Capitol and its first African American and female council members and mayors.
