Why counter offers are good (except for headhunters)

How to use a counter offer to either obtain a better position, or move up within your current company to gain increased responsibility, and an increased salary.

You cannot sit in the same role with the same responsibilities for years and years, because you should be expanding your skillset. Many professionals who are happy with their current company, do not look elsewhere for new opportunities.

This is a mistake. Whether you are planning to leave your company or not, you should always be looking for new opportunities because you never know what else is out there if you don't look.

Once you've received that new job offer, you can let your manager know. If they truly value you, they will want you to stay. They will offer you that promotion or raise that you've been anticipating and you continue your growth in the company.

If your company does not offer you anything and simply lets you walk out the door to a new company, then you know that you weren't appreciated and you have an exciting new opportunity to embark on.
