Swansea's Dylan Thomas Centre to host Doctor Who Day

SWANSEA, Wales - Aug. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- DALEKS from Doctor Who will be descending on Swansea later this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the smash hit TV programme.

News of the event comes in the wake of the announcement over the weekend that Peter Capaldi will take over the famous role from Matt Smith.

The Doctor Who Day will be held at the city's Dylan Thomas Centre on Saturday November 2 as part of the 2013 Dylan Thomas Festival being organised by Swansea Council.

Festival organisers are lining up Doctor Who stars and writers for the day, including Louise Jameson, who was Tom Baker's companion, Leela, and Peter Miles, who played Nyder in 'Genesis of the Daleks'.

There'll also be a children's art workshop with comics artist Mike Collins, a writers' panel and a visit from the Daleks - a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants who first appeared in Dr Who back in 1963.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "Dr Who has been an enormously popular programme on British TV for five decades. It has millions of fans, not just in the UK but across the rest of the world too.

"We also, of course, have strong links with Dr Who in Swansea, with buildings like the Guildhall having been used as filming locations and major stars like Kylie Minogue visiting the city to film scenes.

"It's events that like this that raise Swansea's profile and strenghten our growing reputation as a leading city of culture."

In 2004, Doctor Who took on a proudly Welsh dimension when it began to be produced in Cardiff with Swansea-born writer Russell T Davies as screenwriter.
