Leadership Audiobook Market Poised for Explosive Growth

Audible, iTunes, and Amazon look to virgin territory for growth by tapping self-publishing audiobook authors

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Aug. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- With the audiobook market growing by a double digit percentage again in 2013, it is primed to have continued explosive growth in the next few years much like happened with ebook market explosion that began in 2008. There are multiple factors driving this growth. 1. The limited number of titles. 2. The ease of self-publishing audiobook via ACX.com (owned by Amazon). 3. The demand for readers looking for ways to maximize their time by doing two things at once will continue to increase.

Consider that there are less than 100,000 audiobook titles currently for sale on Amazon.com and nearly 200,000 on Audible.com, which is now owned by Amazon and controls 80% of the audiobook market. When you compare over 200,000 audiobooks collectively available online versus 40 Million books in print available online, one can see that this market is still in its infancy. The vast majority of traditionally published authors haven't even published an audio version of their book.

Amazon.com owns the audiobook market via their acquisition of Audible in 2008 and has marketing prowess, size, and scale to cause the audiobook market to explode. ACX.com, Amazon's self-publishing audiobook arm, which now offers options for authors and narrators to distribute their titles through Audible.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes.com sales channels, only became available in 2012. Early adopter self-publishing audiobook authors can get in on the ground floor and ride the wave of success more easily than once the market is crowded with more choices in a few short years. If a listener purchases an audiobook as one of their first three as a AudibleListener® member on Audible.com, the author will receive an extra Twenty-Five Dollar Bonus in addition to their royalty. Audible.com even offers a free download just for trying their free 30 day membership trial.

More and more people are starting to look for ways to learn and do something else at the same time and audiobooks solve this issue. Reading a book used to require someone to give their undivided attention to reading; now, a reader can be commuting to work, doing homework, cleaning the house, cooking dinner, working out at the gym, watching their kids and listening to an audiobook. A listener can easily ‘read’ a book or two each week by using audiobooks. By the end of a year, a listener will have heard over three million words – and countless stories.
