Comedian Dwayne Perkins' Conan appearance starts an online Almond Craze

Conan regular & Comedy Central veteran’s e-book skyrockets from his appearance on Conan

When comedian Dwayne Perkins decided to turn his favorite blogs into a book, he opted to approach book-publishing with the same brand of do-it-yourself hustle he’s used for years to make himself a venerable force in the comedy world.

Borrowing from his Brooklyn roots, Dwayne skipped over the typical agent/publisher gauntlet most first-time authors endure - which can take years, if ever, to acquire - and hit the streets to promote his opus, much like his favorite rappers had done before him. The goal was to sell his book from his digital “trunk.” Upon release, “Hot Chocolate For the Mind” reached number 16 in its Amazon category with only grassroots promotion. But last week, an appearance on Conan sparked an e-book downloading frenzy, propelling “Hot Chocolate for the Mind” to number 1 in its category overnight.  

Oddly enough, Dwayne’s dig on new media on an old media outlet pushed sales of his new media book.  It also led to scores of people posting on their pages the very thing Dwayne made fun of during his Conan appearance.  

Dwayne quipped on the absurdity of sharing every thought on social media and on how posting something as trivial as “I like almonds” would get scores of earnest responses.  Hours later an “I Like Almonds” group was started on Facebook.   People posted “I like almonds” on their pages to test Dwayne’s theory.  The nation is going almond crazy and there’s really no way of telling who’s in on the joke or who’s MISSING SOMETHING?

Dwayne Perkins, listed as one of the top five comedians to watch by Rolling Stone magazine, describes his collection of comedic essays and funny stories as “the book David Sedaris would have written if he were a straight black man from Brooklyn doing comedy in Dubai.” Perkins is thrilled by the bump in sales and says, “considering the book cost less than an actual cup of hot chocolate, I hope to see it continue.”
