Drumming up a Storm in the Garden

It is the nature of drumming and drummers to make noise. Often this is a loud noise so it is an occupational hazard that drumming practice can cause noise disputes with neighbours. The Boxy room is ideal as a sound proof drum room for practice and tuition and its modular construction is perfect within a garden room.

The modular design of the Boxy room means that it can be installed into almost any space, including both house and garden locations, pre-existing buildings and new constructions - even a garden shed.

When housing a sound proof studio within a new building many different planning regulations and structural obstacles will need to be taken into account. In garden drum rooms for example, planning regulations need to be addressed as a priority. Many authorities will regulate against buildings higher than 2.5 metres and of course, noise disturbance can interfere in closely built up residential areas. Great care must therefore be taken with the initial planning and design; the ground needs to be levelled and laid with concrete before a timber frame carcass is built providing support and structural integrity and a skin is laid on top of the wooden skeleton before the exterior is added. This all creates the perfect space for the bespoke drum room to be installed inside.

Installing a sound proof studio in a pre-existing building comes with it's own issues - here, structural obstacles like supportive ceiling beams may have to be taken into account and built around.

All Boxy drum rooms are bespoke and Amadeus will design each room in consultation with the client. Features can include acoustic windows that allow natural light in but maintain sound reduction. Acoustic doors are also available and can feature acoustic glass or the double airlock of a recording studio doorset. Outside roofs can be manufactured in specialist rubber, with a higher durability than felt, ultimately making them more economical. Amadeus can also use passive air vents in the drum rooms - ventilation systems using convection currents rather than electricity to generate a fresh air supply, which additionally utilises baffles to ensure low noise transmission. The specially designed acoustic panels fitted by Amadeus on the interior are crucial for effective sound management.

The finish is just as important as the structure and Amadeus accommodates any aesthetic needs the client may have. The interior of the drum room is plastered and painted and there is a wide choice of coloured sound absorption panels that also come in a range of contemporary print designs. A teenager's studio may have cool neon electrical fittings or an outside drum room may be clad in wood, sympathetic to the traditional exterior of neighbouring outbuildings.

Lastly, the modular design of the drum room gives it the flexibility to be moved to a new location very easily. The Boxy room makes a perfect sound proof studio, either outside or inside, and allows the drummer to enjoy drumming practice while the neighbour enjoys peace and quiet.
