By: Buttwinick Musical Services Between 35,000 hours in the teacher chair and being a veteran professional musician, Marty has learned to both discover and prioritize what each student needs to do to become the musician they want. People have different backgrounds, ability levels and interests, so each lesson truly hits home, keeping students winning, happy and moving ahead. A beginner usually needs to start with a song, while an experienced player needs to dig in! “Marty’s teaching style is by far the most logical and motivating I’ve encountered in all my musical training. I look forward to practicing every day. He has rekindled my passion for music,” says Brian, a daytime bass student. “Playing bass, guitar and piano gave university-trained Buttwinick the background to see how the elements of music relate to many instruments which is a valuable asset,” says guitar student, Alex E. What makes Marty different from other teachers, is his ability to find the exact thing a student needs: he is a great observer, organizer and trouble shooter. Some lessons are straight-ahead, whereas many are not. The reason for a difficulty isn’t always what it might seem to be. Discovering and handling these “pot holes” is a skill Marty has developed through his professional experience both as a musician as well as a teacher. An example is the student who came to him years ago saying, “I want to learn to read music. I read a bit, but I’m not very good.” Well, upon inspection he actually read just fine! His timing was off so he kept getting out of sync with the other musicians. Marty fixed the student’s weak rhythm in two months and all was well: zeroing in on only what is needed. Free flowing communication is elemental in every lesson. Marty knows what his students' goals are and whether they are achieving them or not. And most importantly, his students know as well. Goals are set and achieved with new ones set to work towards. The accomplishment of personal goals is what keeps his students taking lessons for years at a stretch. When a student has achieved all of their stated goals, they are done; and have a strong foundation to keep going on their own. What continually amazes Marty’s students, is how he gets them to the next level so quickly without having them do unnecessary things. “My only agenda is for my student’s to play how they want to play. My lessons are not rote,” says Buttwinick. Looking over the Personalized Music Lessons teaching philosophy, Marty says “There are only seven musical areas to study, though the application to creating music is unlimited. At the first lesson, I check out what the student can and cannot do, consult his or her goals, and start with the elements that most directly address the person sitting before me.” You can read more about Marty’s teaching methods at this link: http://www.personalizedmusiclessons.com/ Marty Buttwinick is a veteran musician, band leader and instructor.
