People with SMA experience a loss of motor neurons due to the deletion or mutation of a gene that is responsible for keeping motor neurons alive.  This loss leads to weakened muscles that atrophy (waste away) over time.  Voluntary muscles, respiratory muscles, and swallowing muscles are affected.  Many people lose the ability to even smile.
