HAMDEN, Conn. - July 30, 2013 - PRLog -- The media has recently turned to Connecticut Divorce Attorney Renée C. Bauer for her professional insight. The lawyer, of Bauer Law Group, LLC, was recently quoted in two news stories—one about a man who was found to be married to two women at once and another about a proposed law change that would allow adult adoptees to have access to their original birth certificates. Attorney Bauer is an award-winning divorce lawyer who assists clients with various types of family law matters.

As reported by the NBC Connecticut News, it was discovered that man who was working for the Department of Corrections in Bridgeport had two wives who were receiving healthcare benefits through his job. It turned out that the man married one woman in 1985 and then later married someone else without divorcing the first wife. The department learned of the issue after conducting an audit checking for any inaccuracies in its employees’ health care coverage, according to the broadcast news story. After a state attorney and a Superior Court judge reviewed a submitted affidavit from the involved parties and the facts of the case, a warrant was issued for the man’s arrest. He is scheduled to appear before the court at the end of August.

In discussing the legal challenges that would arise from a double marriage such as this one, Attorney Bauer raised the following question, which was quoted in the news story: “How would marital property, assets and debts be divided when there is a third spouse in the equation?”

The other news story was reported through an article by the Connecticut Law Tribune. According to the article, an organization called Access Connecticut that is lobbying to try to get a change in current Connecticut law so that it is easier for adults who were adopted as children to obtain their original birth certificates in addition to their adoption birth certificates. Besides allowing these individuals to learn who their birth parents and blood relatives are, such access would also allow them to learn about any genetic problems and health problems that could affect them down the road.

The Connecticut Law Tribune article noted that the General Assembly approved a similar bill in 2006 that ended up being vetoed by the state’s governor at the time. The article also included commentary on this issue by Attorney Bauer, who stated that this measure would be different because it simply provides access to the birth certificate rather than “carte blanche access to all sensitive documents” related to the adoption. Also, in its current state, the proposed measure would give birth parents who do not wish to be contacted in the future the ability to opt out, she stated. The lawyer called the proposed legislative change long overdue.

“This is more than a legal issue, it’s a human issue,” Attorney Bauer was quoted as saying. “It is illusory for a biological parent to think they will forever remain anonymous. There is a far greater benefit to making this information available to adoptees—and I have yet to hear of a story where disclosure of this information was detrimental to anyone involved.”

Attorney Bauer has received many professional accolades during her legal career.
