Black Girls CODE Brings Mobile App Development Workshop to Memphis during Summer of CODE - The Remix

July 30, 2013 - PRLog -- The Memphis chapter of Black Girls CODE will host workshops on August 10th & 24th at The Benjamin Hooks Library; 3030 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38111. Classes will focus on mobile app development with Android AppInventor and feature exciting "tech chats" from inspiring women mobile innovators.

“We are excited to partner with the Memphis Library and Lokion Interactive to bring Black Girls CODE's mobile app development workshop to Memphis. I hope girls across the region come and learn firsthand just how easy it is to turn their ideas into real working mobile apps,” shares Core Team Lead, Nnaemeka Egwuekwe.

All Black Girls CODE events are geared towards introducing participants to the technological universe and encouraging them to pursue careers as tech creators and entrepreneurs.

Workshops are $35 per child; registration will begin at 9:00 AM and class promptly starts at 10:00 AM. Because space is limited, parents are encouraged to register children as soon as possible. The August 10th workshop is open to girls 10-12, the August 24th event for girls 13-17. No prior programming experience is required for this class.

“It is with the help of volunteers that Black Girls CODE is able to successfully host workshops in Memphis,” says Community Outreach Lead, Nicole Harris. “The technical levels of volunteers range from guru to beginner; there’s no skill set requirement to lend a helping hand.”

Individuals wishing to volunteer should visit www.blackgirlscode.com and fill out a volunteer sign up form located on the website. Volunteer orientation will be held at the library on August 7th & 19th at 6:30 pm, in room L-56.

Established in 2011 by Memphis native, Kimberly Bryant, Black Girls CODE has been a frontrunner in the drive to change the face of technology. In 2012, during its first full year of programming, BGC was able to touch the lives of more than 800 girls in 16 cities across the globe.  While Bryant founded the program in an effort to increase the number of women of color in the digital space, the organization welcomes and embraces young women of all races and ethnicities.
