HOUSTON - July 30, 2013 - PRLog -- “Because making a sound decision is difficult when you are faced with a car problem and time restraints, finding a shop takes time and patience; you want to research and evaluate the facts in a relaxed fashion,” writes Tom Torbjorsen, maintenance editor for AOL autos.

“Emergencies create an emotional climate that thwarts a clear and objective evaluation,” writes Torbjorsen. “Having time gives you the upper hand, and the ability to ask questions you might not ask if you are in a crunch for time,” Torbjorsen continues.

Torbjorsen offers this advice for car owners who are visiting shops: “While visiting the shop(s) you're interested in, note whether they are clean and orderly.”

Torbjorsen also recommends car owners asking questions to any customers that are in the shop. “If there are customers there, be bold and ask them questions, such as, “Why do you do business with this shop?”

One of the most tried and true ways to find an auto body shop is word of mouth, according to Philip Reed, a senior consumer advice editor at Edumunds.com.

Reed advises car owners to ask friends and family for recommendations.

“Any business can advertise, but you'll do better with a shop that friends, family or acquaintances recommend. It's a business that has proven it can satisfy customers. And it might not be the biggest or best-known shop in your area,” Reed continues.

But car owners shouldn’t just take other people’s word for it, they should do their own research as well. Car owners should look for credentials such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification, and check to see if they have Better Business Borough Accreditation.

Reed also recommends checking the repair shop out –ahead of time.

“While at the facility, look for technician certifications displayed on the wall. If the walls are bare, ask to see the techs' certifications,” advises Reed. “This will tell you a lot about the people that work at the facility.”

Car owners should try to find a shop that communicates well and is happy to answer any questions.

“Is the shop owner or manager a grouch who seems to resent answering your questions?” Reed asks. “You'll be happier with a shop where the owner communicates well and is straightforward with customers.”

Visiting car repair shops ahead of time allows car owners a chance to ask questions, and make informed decisions, without the added pressure of car problems.
