A New Model For Self Publishing?

Self-published Authors may get a break with a new eBook publishing model

FORT SMITH, Ark. - July 24, 2013 - PRLog -- An innovative website feature is will soon introduce a new concept to those who write and self-publish their own books. EBookOnFire.com is about to launch a new program to allow Authors to be paid instantly, via Paypal, whenever one of their eBooks is sold online.

This is in direct opposition to the existing business model, wherein Authors post their eBooks with Amazon.com or other eBook-stores, then wait months for the "royalties" they earn to be sent to them. Most companies won't pay until those royalties reach a certain amount, and then payment is made after the end of that quarter. If an Author doesn't hit that plateau until after that quarter ends, he or she may have to wait another three months or more for what their books have earned for them.

The website's founder, Wayne Hicks, is himself a self-published Author, with five novels already available online and more coming soon. He's experienced this issue firsthand.

"My first month, my sales didn't reach the level that causes a check to be cut," he says, "and that was frustrating. I began marketing my books on my own website, and then I got paid instantly."

Many new Authors, however, don't have it so easy.

"There seem to be a lot of new writers who don't have a website where they can market their own books," says Wayne, "or aren't sure how to configure everything. I've talked with a lot fo them, and desided to see if something couldn't be done about this problem. This is just the result of some serious thought on the subject."

When the new program launches this coming week, Authors will be able to upload their own eBooks to the site, set the price they want them to sell for and input the Paypal account they want paid whenever one of them sells. They'll be able to track their sales online, and even see how many times a book was looked at by a prospective buyer.

If the Author doesn't have it in a standard eBook format, such as for the Kindle or Nook, it's not a problem. Wayne says he'll handle the conversion for them, and if they need help with editing, cover design, layout or anything else, he has skilled people available to assist them. And all of these services are available to the Author without any out-of-pocket expense.

"My business model is really very simple," Wayne says. "I set a small commission rate that we charge for each book sold from the site, and add another small percentage for each of the extra services. That way, there's no up-front cost to the writer, and they still get the lion's share whenever a book is sold."

The site is just going live, but there are expansions already in the works. Another field Wayne is entering is Print-On-Demand. Many self-published Authors use such services to make it possible for customers to get their work in print, but most of these companies charge a substantial set-up fee and high printing and commission rates.

"A lot of readers still like the feel of a book in their hands," Wayne explains. "I'm looking at purchasing my own POD equipment, so that I can have someone ready to print and ship a book as soon as an order comes in. And just like the eBook end of the business, the writer will get paid as soon as the order is completed. The retail price will likely be higher, and we'll take out our printing and handling costs, of course, but once again we'll eliminate the upfront fees for the writer, and that's my goal!"
