BEDFORD, Mass. - July 24, 2013 - PRLog -- William W. Backus Hospital health system, a 213-bed hospital in Norwich, CT and several off-site locations, is preparing its medical coding staff for the ICD-10 deadline with Libman Education’s Anatomy & Physiology for Coders course.

The course’s 12-week, accelerated online and concise-yet-thorough format enables medical coding departments to train for ICD-10 while keeping up with ongoing coding tasks. The course’s focus on anatomy and physiology provides an immediate benefit of increased ICD-9 and CPT coding proficiency, while also preparing students for the anatomy-intensive requirements of ICD-10-CM and –PCS.

“With the new ICD-10 coding system around the corner, we needed a reputable course to help bring our busy coders up to speed,” said Julie Chapman CPC-H, CCS, Coding Supervisor at William W. Backus Hospital. “For this reason, we chose Anatomy & Physiology for Coders, which several other hospitals have already used; we want our coders to be as well-trained in A&P as possible so the transition to ICD-10 will be smooth. With well-trained coders comes accurate coding, which relates to our mission to improve the health of our communities.”

The William W. Backus Hospital health system, established in 1893, includes approximately 300 expert physicians offering a wide range of healthcare services. Its numerous off-site locations include several health centers, Backus Home Health Care and the Backus Outpatient Care Center.

The Hospital is committed to being responsive and accountable to those for whose benefit it exists, and to improving the health of its communities. Recently, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield named Backus Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacement.

Libman Education’s Anatomy & Physiology for Coders course provides a comprehensive and complete review of major body systems, with weekly lesson plans based on one or more chapters from the textbook Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology by Donald Rizzo. Additional bonus content includes disease processes, selected medical terminology, frequently prescribed drugs, and commonly ordered laboratory tests.

The course has been given prior approval by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for 24 CEUs (continuing education units) and by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) for 6 CEUs.
