As soon as they were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Wilmington Plastic Surgery added the latest generation in breast implants to the options available for their breast surgery patients. Patients may now choose among saline-filled, silicone gel-filled and the new form-stable implants.

The FDA approved the Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Gel Filled Breast Implant, manufactured by Allergan, Inc, in February of this year. These implants were approved for breast enhancement in women 22 and older, and for women of any age undergoing breast reconstruction following surgery.

According to Guy Williams, CMPE, practice administrator for Wilmington Plastic Surgery, the science behind the new technology has to do with the cross-linking in the silicone gel, which makes it more cohesive and leads to firmer implants. This consistency has led to the nickname, “Gummy Bear implants.”

“This product was developed and tested over seven years and on nearly 1,000 women,” explained Williams. “The study showed it was associated with a high satisfaction rate and an extremely low complication rate.”

Williams commented that form stable implants have been available outside the United States for years. “We are pleased to be able to make this another option for Wilmington Plastic Surgery patients,” he said.

While they are not necessarily the best choice for all patients, many women prefer form stable implants because their teardrop shape appears more anatomically natural and the consistency of the new gel feels more like actual breast tissue. They also may be a better choice for women who are undergoing reconstruction following mastectomy because they are not dependent upon being fitted under existing breast tissue.

Women with very small breasts, as well as those with “tubular” shaped breasts, may also find form stable implants an especially good option. The teardrop form gives these women more shape in the upper part of the breast, and more fullness in the lower part, creating pleasing solutions to both of these issues.

Williams said that because this implant is available in a wide variety of heights, widths and cup sizes, the patient and surgeon have many more options for customization and achieving the result the patient desires.

The most established practice in the region, Wilmington Plastic Surgery has been serving southeastern North Carolina for more than 30 years. Together with a highly experienced staff of nurses and technicians, the four board-certified plastic surgeons and physician assistant offer patients a complete range of surgical and non-invasive reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.
