New Study Backs President Obama's Remarks On Trayvon Verdict

President Barack Obama can now take comfort in a recent study that overwhelmingly back his recent comment following the acquittal of George Zimmerman

NEW YORK - July 23, 2013 - PRLog -- In his first public comment since the explosive Trayvon Martin verdict burst into a fireball of controversy, President Barack Obama weighed in last week, reminding Americans of his own experience with racial profiling before he became a Senator.  “You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son.  Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago,” Obama told in impromptu press briefing at the White House.  “There are very few African-American men in this country who haven’t had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me.”

But while critics were quick to question the president’s remarks, some even seeing them as inflammatory, a recent research study by John Roman of the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center appears to solidly back Mr. Obama.

The study found that in cases where the shooter is white and the victim is black, they are ruled justified in 9.5 percent in so-called non-stand your ground states.  But in stand your ground states like Florida, the rate jumped to a whopping 17 percent.  “In fact, they dwarf every other racial disparity in an already racially unbalanced criminal justice system. The differences are so great that any notion that justice in America is color-blind is at risk,” Roman wrote.

In drawing his conclusions, Roman looked at several factors and closely examined Supplemental Homicide Reports sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigations by local law enforcement between 2005 and 2010.

George Zimmerman, a self-styled neighborhood watch who pleaded self-defense, was acquitted on July 13 of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, and the verdict set off demonstrations in more than 100 cities over the week-end.
