FAIRFORD, U.K. - July 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Fairford, England, United Kingdom: TT electronics integrated manufacturing services (IMS) recently hosted an event at its New Chapel Electronics (NCE) facility for aspiring engineers in Gloucestershire, England. NCE has extensive experience in engineering design and manufacturing technology related to the aerospace and defence industry - an industry which provides 59,000 direct jobs in the South West of England alone.

On July 2, the unique technologies and engineering expertise of NCE were shared with a group of students from Gloucestershire. Children aged between 10 and 11 from Southrop Primary School enjoyed a tour around the NCE facility, where they observed a leading Aerospace technology company in their own hometown. The event, sponsored by GFirst LEP, Gloucestershire's Local Enterprise Partnership, was organised to raise enthusiasm among primary school children in Gloucestershire for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). Highlights of the plant tour included a hands-on demonstration of the 3-D CAD (computer aided design) software used by NCE engineers and a tour of New Chapel's in-house machine shop.

"It was our pleasure to host students participating in the GFirst STEM challenge. The enthusiasm they exhibited was fantastic, as they manufactured their own aerospace harness," said Mark Cook, Operations Manager at New Chapel Electronics. "We welcomed the opportunity to establish better partnerships with local schools and universities to encourage a future generation of engineers in the UK. NCE runs its own rigorous in-house training programme for young people that allow aspiring engineers to learn a trade specific to the aerospace and defence industries. I think that the students have really benefitted from this project and we are looking forward to participating again next year."

Alan Brown, Head Teacher at Southrop Primary School commented, "This project has been amazing. Without the assistance of New Chapel Electronics and GFirst LEP, the children would not have been able to enjoy this experience. I'm sure as a result of this exposure many more young children will be interested in following a career in science, technology, engineering and maths."

"Across the county, the project has been a huge success with nearly 4,000 primary school children getting involved," said Dr. Claire Mould, Board Member of GFirst LEP and Chief Executive OPENhouse. "It has been met with such enthusiasm by youngsters that we want to repeat the project and continue to involve more schools and companies. As part of our economic growth plan, we need to ensure that we have the right skills in the county and we are keen to encourage young people to pursue a future career in engineering and manufacturing."
