SAN DIEGO - July 22, 2013 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO (July 22, 2013)… Marking its second high profile award, the $130 million United States Marine Corps. Bachelor Enlisted Quarters Package 8 at Camp Pendleton has won a national Design-Build award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), a Washington D.C. -based organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in the design-build industry. The award will be presented Tuesday, November 5 at the DBIA’s annual awards dinner in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The San Diego architectural firms RJC Architects and Joseph Wong Design Associates, in a design/build team with Hensel Phelps Soltek Joint Venture, completed the award-winning project in 2012. That same year, the residential campus was named an American Public Works Association (APWA) Public Works Project of the Year – lauded for its appealing design and energy efficiency – by the San Diego/Imperial chapter.

Other key members of the team on this project include K. Killman Design; RBF, civil engineer; Berger ABAM, structural engineer; MA Engineers, mechanical engineer; Elen Engineers, electrical engineer; KEMA, sustainable design consulting; and Aon Fire Protection.

Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Gold facility, the 483,573- square-foot project was judged for the DBIA honor by a panel of experts focused on the identification of practices that constitute “design-build done right.”  The facility’s four dormitories accommodate 1,588 Marine Corps personnel in a 25-acre park-like setting. Each four-story dormitory has 200 two-person residential modules arranged in a highly articulated, non-institutional L-shaped building that maximizes views and individual privacy. Furthering the project’s livability, four comfortable community centers are surrounded by basketball courts, outdoor covered barbecue areas, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and covered pavilions -- opening onto a central amphitheater that accommodates a broad range of activities.

“Our team is very pleased and proud to be recognized on a national level,” said Laura Maddox, project architect of RJC Architects. “This project is the result of an excellent design-build team -- and the diligence and hard work of many.  We worked shoulder to shoulder with our customer to provide the very best quality of life for enlisted personnel while minimizing long term ownership costs to the Marines.”
