Merkalangelo Claims a Wall at Museum of Modern Art

NEW YORK - July 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Nineteen-year-old artist Merkalangelo officially made his debut in the world of art by “claiming” a wall at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

On July 20 at 1:20 p.m., Merkalangelo, an up-and-coming artist and musician, claimed the empty wall using an art label that read: “Merkalangelo. Human, born 1993. Thanks Duchamp.” The latter portion represents Merkalangelo’s thanking of the famous French painter, writer and sculptor for inspiring him to try something that had never been done before in the art world.

“Every wall in a museum deserves to be filled, and this was my way of making sure this wall at the Museum of Modern Art would no longer be artless,” said Merkalangelo. “No artist has ever claimed a wall at a museum like this before, and I’m thrilled to the very first to do so. I plan on making my entrance into the world of art in a groundbreaking and memorable way, and this is just the start.”

In a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFfBKOilBlM) posted after the event, Merkalangelo can be seen browsing a section of the Museum of Modern Art. He then nonchalantly pulls the art label from his pocket and pastes it to an empty wall in the museum. The artist then proudly smiles next to his wall, claiming it as his own unique work of art.



Merkalangelo is a fresh, young artist who has experimented with both music and visual art. His previous work, Prologue EP, is a 16-minute hip-hop extended play. The artist has much planned for the future and will release new works soon.

“I plan on making waves in the art world both now and for many years to come,” said Merkalangelo. “I have no shortage of original, thought-provoking ideas, which I express through many different avenues. Whether it’s with music or through a conceptual art piece, I want to inspire people to look at the world differently—much like Duchamp did for me.”
