Slusher, a long-time Lexington resident, passed away on July 4, just weeks before his work was to be published. In his acknowledgements Roger shared “In 1955, at the age of eight, I got the history bug.” His love of history never wavered and at the time of his death he had served as president of the Santa Fe Trail Association, director of the Lexington Historical Museum, and a board member of the Lexington Library and Historical Association. Images of America: Lexington allows readers to discover the town’s unique history. From the earliest settlers in the 1800s, to the founding of the first major business owned by the Aull brothers in 1822, the first woman elected sheriff in the U.S. in 1919, and the opening of the first mall in 1963 featuring a new A&P store, Roger Slusher’s book reveals Lexington’s history in hundreds of stunning vintage images. River Reader Books will be hosting an event in memory of Roger Slusher tentatively scheduled for late August. Pat Worth, proprietor of River Reader Books, will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the event to the Lexington Historical Museum. Details will be available as soon as a date is set.
