ST. LOUIS - July 22, 2013 - PRLog -- In honor of UV Safety Month (July), the RNs at Nurse Response, a provider of multilingual telehealth services, have put together a few tips for reducing the risk of sun damage.

“Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and UV rays are the main cause,” said Kim Tuck, RN, President & CEO of Nurse Response. “UV radiation can also cause eye damage including cataracts and macular degeneration, weaken the immune system, and cause wrinkles and premature aging. It’s also important to remember that UV radiation doesn’t just happen on the sunniest of summer days, but year-round and even on cloudy days.”

By following the steps below, you can protect your skin and lower your risk of developing skin cancer:

Reduce time spent in the sun during its strongest hours – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
Wear long sleeves and a hat that provides shade to your face, ears and neck.

·         Wear polarized sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV rays.

Don’t use tanning beds.

·         Check your skin regularly for changes. During other routine health exams, ask your doctor for a skin cancer check.
