New Clinically-Focused Program Launched by Academy of Functional Medicine & Genomics

The Academy of Functional Medicine & Genomics, one of the top on-line training organizations, is now offering a "Clinically-Focused" course requiring students to present more extensive case studies.

WASHINGTON - July 22, 2013 - PRLog -- According to Dr. C. E. Gant, Chairman of The Academy of Functional Medicine & Genomics, most functional medicine teaching approaches take a bottom up approach. The Academy, however, utilizes a top down strategy instead, emphasizing the command control center (the brain).

The course will begin in August with two 6-week modules on Humanity’s most severe cause of morbidity and mortality: Mental, Neurological and Substance Use Disorders. Included in these Clinically-Focused courses will be the usual functional medicine and genomic education (the “soup”), the neurofeedback and qEEG mapping and entrainment coursework (the “sparks”), and an introduction to mindfulness-based psychotherapies.

The Academy will continue to offer a Basic Sciences Certification program, as well. Both courses will be taught on-line. While the Basic Sciences program offers a comprehensive, in-depth, course on the nuts and bolts of functional medicine and genomics, the Clinically-Focused course offers the practicum on how to apply this extensive knowledge to various disorders and disease processes.

The Basic Sciences course is generally deemed to be the prerequisite for the Clinically-Focused program, however, knowledgeable clinicians already familiar with the basic sciences, functional medicine and genomic testing may elect to opt out of the Basic Sciences program. The one exception includes those that are enrolled in the accredited, Doctor of Health Science (DHS) program, where completion of both courses is a core requirement to attaining the doctorate degree.

Specifically, the Clinically-Focused course requires students to present more case studies in order to gain a practical knowledge of the application of functional medicine and genomic testing in the treatment of various chronic medical, psychological and psychiatric disorders. This course will be expected to expand the scope of knowledge and practice for chiropractors, nurse practitioners, physicians, dentists, nurses, psychiatrists, osteopaths, physical therapists, energetic medicine practitioners, and other practitioners of complementary and alternative modalities.

The clinical education track will adopt a similar structure as the basic sciences course. In its entirety, there will be 12, six-week modules. It will utilize a weekly, web-based, live session format that is approximately 1.5-2 hours in duration. Once again, the Academy has found this format to be optimal for affording flexibility to students as it’s relatively non-intrusive in their busy lives. Sessions are also recorded so that students with scheduling conflicts can easily catch-up.

“I joined the Academy of Functional Medicine only after researching all of the other programs I could find offering training in functional medicine. Once I reviewed the sample webinars by Dr. Gant, I was sold. His style is just what I was looking for because he explains even the most complicated concepts in a clear and concise way without ever making you feel stupid for not knowing something. He is a wise and compassionate physician and his love of teaching shines through. Once you see the power of functional medicine in action, it’s almost impossible to go back to practicing medicine the old way. This is one of the best choices I have ever made in continuing medical education. These principles will put you five to fifteen years ahead of what most doctors are now practicing.”
Neil F. Neimark, M.D.

The Academy is offering an early registration great-savings promotion before August 1st for both the Basic Sciences and the Clinically-Focused courses. Check here for the latest information: www.academyoffunctionalmedicine.com/news
