VAIL, Colo. - July 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the New York Philharmonic at Bravo! Vail on Sunday, July 21 in performance of Liszt’s Totentanz for a splendid evening that also features Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, spotlighting New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow. The magic begins at 6 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater with New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert at the podium.

Scheherazade – Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical retelling of 1,001 Arabian Nights – reflects the mystique of the collection of millennium-old fantasy tales from Egypt, Persia and India. The evening spotlights Dicterow, an acclaimed violinist, recording artist and the longest-serving concertmaster in New York Philharmonic history. After 34 years as concertmaster, he will step down following the 2013-2014 season to become the first holder of the Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.

Scheherazade will always be, in my mind, a piece for Glenn Dicterow,” said Gilbert. “His silken, gorgeous, rich violin sound — truly one of the world’s greatest — is perfect for it. The way he spins out a line, his sinuous storytelling, is just amazing.”

Liszt’s Totentanz, featuring Thibaudet, is also a highlight of the evening and the New York Philharmonic’s Bravo! Vail residency. Like Rimsky-Korsakov, Liszt sought inspiration while composing this great masterwork: He was said to have based the piece either on Hans Holbein’s series of woodcuts of the same name or Francesco Traini’s mid-14th century painting The Triumph of Death, depending on which biographer is consulted.

Called “one of the best pianists of our time” (New York Sun), Thibaudet is a favorite among Vail audiences. His talent at coaxing subtle and surprising colors and textures from even old favorites has led the New York Times to exclaim, “…every note he fashions is a pearl…the joy, brilliance and musicality of his performance could not be missed.” Born in Lyon, France, Thibaudet has performed around the world for more than 30 years and recorded more than 40 albums, and has a depth and natural charisma that have made him one of the most sought-after soloists by today’s foremost orchestras, conductors and festivals.
