East Lake High School Announces 2 New Academies – CYBER WARRIOR and BIOMEDICAL

Announcing two new Pinellas County Career Academies starting this fall: the Cyber Warrior Academy and the Biomedical Academy.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - July 18, 2013 - PRLog -- East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, FL is proud to announce two new Career Academies starting this fall:  the Cyber Warrior Academy and the Biomedical Academy.  Both programs are being implemented by Career Technical Education Foundation, Inc. (CTEF), the same not-for-profit that created and sustains East Lake’s outstanding Engineering Academy designated a Center of Excellence by Pinellas County, recognized as a top 10 national Project Lead the Way model school, and selected nationally as one of 15 PRIME (Partnership Response in Manufacturing Education) STEM career academies in the nation.  East Lake High School students interested in either the Cyber Warrior or Biomedical academy should contact their counselor to participate.

The Cyber Warrior Academy is a timely start-up given recent news amplifying the critical importance of protecting the nation’s cyber security.  Viruses, spyware, spam, and so-called “phishing” scams lure people into revealing sensitive and private information. Internet attacks crash popular websites.  CTEF created the Cyber Warrior© curriculum with simulated cyber competitions with cyber security computer scientists from MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit technology center partnering with the government on mission-critical operations.  Course content is certified by (ISC)2, the global leader in educating and certifying cyber security professionals.  (ISC)2 will provide Cyber Warrior Academy students the opportunity to take SCCP© professional certification as part of the curriculum.

The Biomedical Academy explores concepts of human medicine; offering topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health.  Through activities, like dissecting a heart, students examine the processes, structures and interactions of the human body – often playing the role of biomedical professionals. They also explore the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, working collaboratively to investigate and design innovative solutions to the health challenges of the 21st century such as fighting cancer with nanotechnology.  Healthcare is a growing industry; 20.5 million jobs will be added to the healthcare sector, increasing 21% in a ten year period ending in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
