British Gas Ends Auto Rollover On Business Energy Contracts

July 18, 2013 - PRLog -- For all their business energy customers, British Gas has announced that they will be ending their rollover process on all energy contracts. This means an end to British Gas selling products that automatically commit customers to fixed term energy contracts if they fail to cancel their contract within a certain time frame.

What this means for existing customers is that if they reach the end of their contract before June next year, they will be able to choose a contract that does not rollover. For new customers to British Gas, products without automatic rollovers will be launched in September.

This is great news for small businesses, and follows calls last week from E.ON to ban these rollover deals. Ofgem have also been working to tackle auto-rollover deals, as they consider bringing in new rules to stop smaller businesses from paying above the odds for these contracts. In fact, a survey last year found that UK firms could often be spending 61% more on their energy bill (around £1,600) than the average as a result of these contracts.

British Gas are the first supplier to announce plans to end these rollover contracts, and have extended a plea that they have heard from their customers to the industry at large, saying they want “the industry and the regulator to work together to ensure that all customers have a transparent choice of products that never include auto-rollover.”
