Anita Sarkeesian of "Feminist Frequency" joins Camp Reel Stories

Anita Sarkeesian, author of Feminist Frequency, joins a stellar roster of leading ladies in teaching young women aged 13-18 in Camp Reel Stories July 22-26th. The Film Festival will screen the girls' work July 27th in Alameda, CA.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - July 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Anita Sarkeesian is author of the video series Tropes vs. Women, which examines female sterotypes in pop culture, most notably the video game industry.  Camp Reel Stories is aimed at teaching the young ladies how to find their unique voice, and train them with the skills to pursue a career in the film industry.

Camp Reel Stories believes that when women are better represented behind the scenes in the media, they are better reflected on the screen. Camp Reel Stories is a non-profit summer program designed to give 13-18 year old women the skills to empower them to create their own media, to view current media critically and thoughtfully, and to aspire to leadership in their field. Working in small, collaborative groups and utilizing accessible technologies, the campers will be encouraged to actively participate in every stage of the filmmaking process:

Development
Pre-Production
Production
Post-Production
Distribution

Taught by current female leaders in the media industry, this one-week camp will give them the opportunity to make and broadcast their own short films through:

Production Classes, for practical skills
Media Literacy workshops, to help them analyze and evaluate their messages
Leadership workshops, to give them the confidence to lead

The camp will culminate in a film festival where the campers will present their work alongside other local filmmakers to an audience of family, friends and local supporters. In a world where you can't be what you can't see, our hope is that each camper comes away with a stronger belief in the power of their own voice, the power of storytelling, and the power of their community.
