By 1900, with the recovery of the economy and the development of Janssen Place as a private street, the area became the preferred community for Kansas City’s wealthy. The architectural style is Queen Anne, Prairie School, Neo-Georgian, Colonial Revival, Kansas City Shirtwaist, and Shingle. These homes glitter with original brass fixtures, lead and stained-glass windows, and oak, mahogany, and walnut interiors. Some of Kansas City’s most famous and notorious have lived in Hyde Park, from wealthy businessmen and entertainment stars to serial killers. Highlights of Kansas City’s Historic Hyde Park: • The majority of the images have been donated from private collections of local residents, many which have never before been published. • When Hyde Park was developed, Kansas City was the largest western city between San Francisco and St. Louis. • Kansas City’s first golf course was in Hyde Park. • Many of Kansas City’s financial and political leaders lived in Hyde Park during the early decades of the twentieth century. • It was rumored that bank robber Jesse James hid out in the nature spring cave in Hyde Park. • Join the author for a signing: Where: Costco 241 East Linwood Blvd, Kansas City MO 64111 When: Saturday, August 10th, 2013; 11:00 a.m. —2:00 p.m. Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888)-313-2665.
