Free Special Events Webinar: SMART Help for Family & Friends with Dr. Robert Meyers

Co-author of the book Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading and Threatening to speak with SMART Family & Friends Community

MENTOR, Ohio - July 16, 2013 - PRLog -- SMART Recovery will present a free Special Events Webinar SMART Help for Family & Friends with Dr. Robert Meyers on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 9:00 PM EDT.  Register on SMART’s Events Page: www.smartrecovery.org/events.

Dr. Meyers is co-creator of the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach which provides a foundation for SMART’s program for Family and Friends.  He is co-author of the book Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading and Threatening, used extensively by SMART as a reference.

SMART has found this a groundbreaking, effective approach directly, in line with its own evidence-based views on helping those with addiction, and it has been received with great enthusiasm in our SMART community.  CRAFT dovetails well with SMART’s CBT and MI underpinnings and provides a practical, compassionate framework for family interactions and getting people help for their addictive issues and creating lives worth living.

SMART provides weekly online meetings for Family & Friends on Mondays at 9:00 PM ET and Thursdays at 1:30 PM ET in its voice chat venue and has launched local family & friends SMART meetings around the country, including Chicago, IL, San Diego, CA, Columbus, MD, Cincinnati and Mentor OH, and Portland, OR,  in the past year with great attendance and response: http://www.smartrecovery.org/resources/family.htm

Dr. Meyers has been prominent in the addiction field for 37 years with 23 of those years being at the University of New Mexico.  He is currently the director of Robert J. Meyers, Ph.D. & Associates and is a Research Associate Professor Emeritus in Psychology at the University of New Mexico's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction.  He has been involved in over a dozen clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, including Project Match and the Clinical Trials Network.

Dr. Meyers began his work with the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) in 1976.  He also developed the new innovative "intervention" program used to engage resistant substance abusers to enter treatment – CRAFT -- an evidence-based protocol, which has been shown to be superior to the “traditional” interventions in several randomized clinical trials.  This work has led Dr. Meyers and CRAFT to be one of the 14 featured segments on the Emmy Award-winning HBO Addiction series. Dr. Meyers has also been featured in Oprah magazine for his outstanding work using the Community Reinforcement Approach.  He is an internationally known speaker and trainer who has delivered training on his methods throughout the United States and in countries around the world.  For additional information about Dr. Meyers and his work, please see his website: www.robertjmeyersphd.com.

Both SMART Recovery and Dr. Meyers are pleased to offer information and support to the family and friends of those with addictive issues. We believe they can help in a non-confrontational, positive manner -- without nagging, pleading or threatening.

All are welcome!
