Ethics – A Driving Force at the American Board of Industrial Hygiene

LANSING, Mich. - July 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Merriam-Webster defines the term ‘ethic’ as a set of moral principles; the principles of conduct governing an individual or group; a guiding philosophy; and a consciousness of moral importance.  

Ethics are an important component of how professionals conduct themselves and are also a key element of many accredited certification programs.  This is true for the American Board of Industrial Hygiene who has a written Code of Ethics that applies to each individual certified by the ABIH as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or a Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist (CAIH) (certificants); and, each individual seeking ABIH certification (candidates).

The Code serves as the minimal ethical standards for the professional behavior of ABIH certificants and candidates.  The Code is designed to provide both appropriate ethical practice guidelines and enforceable standards of conduct for all certificants and candidates. The Code also serves as a professional resource for industrial hygienists, as well as for those served by ABIH certificants and candidates.

As professionals in the field of industrial hygiene, ABIH certificants and candidates have the obligation to:

Maintain high standards of integrity and professional conduct.

Accept responsibility for their actions.

Continually seek to enhance their professional capabilities.

Practice with fairness and honesty.

Encourage others to act in a professional manner consistent with the certification standards and responsibilities.

“ABIH is dedicated to professional standards designed to serve the public, employees, employers, clients and the industrial hygiene profession,” stated Lynn O’Donnell, CIH and Executive Director at ABIH.  “ABIH certificants and candidates must give priority to health and safety interests related to the protection of people, and act in a manner that promotes integrity and reflects positively on the profession, consistent with accepted moral, ethical and legal standards.  This Code is the basis for the ABIH’s mark of professionalism and how we conduct ourselves each day,” she continued.
