Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: Theft, Vandalism, Collisions coming soon. are you prepared?

Cities with EV charging station are beginning to experience incidents of vandalism. Purchasing extended warranties will not cover these acts and will soon cost cities thousands of dollars. Theft and collision are other concerns cities will soon face.

ORLANDO, Fla. - July 14, 2013 - PRLog -- News reports began to surface about charging stations that were vandalized in the City of Baltimore and from some of the comments that were left by readers on several websites; you would wonder why folks were shocked to hear this. With the number of charging stations planned for installation over the next several years, this will and might become a regular problem, we can only imagine how many incidents of  vandalism were not reported. The charging stations are so new along with this program that most are not familiar with these devices or have never seen a charging station.

Cities with electric vehicle charging station installed on their city streets have not a clue of problems they will soon face. We have reached out to numerous cities that are unprepared and have not even thought of the safety aspect of this program. Theft, Vandalism, and collision are subject that have been overlooked or put on the back burner. We found that emergency responders in many cities are seriously concerned for the safety of their department and the citizens who come in contact with these devices. They have not been trained or included in the planning stages of the cities infrastructure and then we come across the people who feel an accident or incident involving a charging station will not happen.

Vandalism, theft and collisions are valid concerns because of the number of stations planned and also the locations in where these stations are being installed. These devices become another obstacle for our drivers and they become new targets for bored teens and thieves have not realized the amount of copper in the 18ft cables and the $6k value these stations may carry.  The problem is that most cities have not addressed these issues or prepared for these issues and that leaves people at serious risk. We have supported this program by developing a safety program for emergency responders and stakeholders.

Some will say, you cannot stop a vandal or a thief and that may be true in some ways, but prevention and planning can reduce the chances of any of these events happening to our charging stations. Our federal government did not think this out very clearly and if one was to do research, you will not find any documentation on the web pertaining to safety, collision, theft and vandalism except what has been written by Greenstar concepts LLC, the only EV charging station Safety Company to date.

Greenstar Concepts LLC, has addressed these issues for the last 3 years and currently has the only effective and complete safety program available to stakeholders, city and county municipalities alike. We have been training emergency responders on electric vehicle charging station safety and working with many private organizations in preparing for their infrastructure. Greenstar has now gained interest from some state lawmakers and insurance industry companies that insure electric vehicle charging stations. In some states, The State Fire Marshals office has expressed their concerns for emergency responders who face these devices in the field.

We address many other issues that cities have yet to face and these issues could end up to be costly and Issues such as inspections, safety, training and injury litigation can be destructive and crippling to a city who has invested thousands of dollars, if not millions of dollars in the electric vehicle infrastructure. One injury or a single death could tarnish the hard work and the millions of taxpayers’ dollars the Government has spent and there is no reason whatsoever; why a city has not taken preventive measures to protect the general public. We have found most cities confuse electric vehicle charging station safety with the electric vehicle safety program provided by the NFPA.
