FDA proposal on limiting the amount of inorganic arsenic in apple juices to 10 ppb

LEHI, Utah - July 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Years of analysis and consideration by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has finally led to a conclusion that the amount of inorganic arsenic in apple juice should be limited to the exact amount as what is allowed in drinking water.

Although most of the apple juices available in the market are tested and strictly monitored by FDA(Food and Drug Administration) and the inorganic arsenic levels have been found to be within the 10ppb limit, this move by the FDA is mainly targeted at monitoring apple juices that may be launched in the future. The FDA was still not sure of whether to set the limits on amount of permissible arsenic for many decades now. But now, they have proposed that apple juice in the USA should contain no more than 10 parts per billion of inorganic arsenic, same as the amount that is allowed for drinking water.

Apple juices in the current market or the ones that would be launched in the future shouldn’t contain any more inorganic arsenic than 10ppb. According to Michael Taylor, deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine at FDA, any apple juice that has more than 10ppb of arsenic would be out of the market. Setting the limit will restrict all future apple juices that have more than this level of arsenic. Inorganic arsenic has many negative impacts on health and leads to neurotoxicity, diabetes and skin diseases. Contrary to this type of arsenic, the organic arsenic that is found in water and soil are generally harmless.

This step by FDA towards limiting the amount of arsenic in apple juices is quite a good move. However, some specialists suggest that the amount should be further lessened because of the carcinogenic effects of arsenic. However, non profit organizations have whole heartedly welcomed this step by FDA. For more information, http://immunetreeblog.com or http://www.immunetreeblog.com/weight-loss.
